ECZEMA, PSORIASIS & DERMATITIS
Eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis are common terms we hear or read about, since these are common skin conditions many people experience. Dermatitis is a general term used to describe inflammation of the skin, which may be characterized by the onset of itching, rashes and redness. One condition, called eczema, is often referred to as atopic dermatitis. It usually begins in infancy, appearing as a red and itchy rash, and commonly found behind the knees, inside the elbows, the front of the neck, cheeks and behind the ears. The rash can later leak fluid, crust over, and develop a scab. Another form of dermatitis is called contact dermatitis, in which a rash occurs on a body part that has come into contact with an irritating substance, such as perfume. The rash may sting, burn, and itch, and blisters may develop.
Dermatitis and eczema are terms that are often used interchangeably to describe similar symptoms. What causes eczema or dermatitis are not clear, but they are often associated with allergies and a strong family history of eczema.
Psoriasis, on the other hand, is a different type of skin disorder, which is characterized by a rapid growth of skin cells that tend to grow too rapidly, resulting in the appearance of thick, silvery, or sometimes, red skin patches. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, but experts believe that it may be due to an overactive immune system. It also tends to run in families. The symptoms of psoriasis may be mild, manifesting as small patches of skin rashes, or, it may be severe enough to cause embarrassment from wide areas of raised, reddish areas that are scaly. Itching, pain, and tenderness may also be experienced. The nails, scalp and joints may also be affected. Symptoms may come and go, and flare ups may be triggered by stress, skin injury and alcohol intake.
Remedies used to treat eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis include avoiding factors that trigger skin reactions, including stress. Using moisturizers to relieve dry, itchy skin also works for these conditions. It is also best to avoid scratching the skin, because this can cause bacterial infection and worsening of symptoms.
