SYMPTOMS OF BABY DIAPER RASH

Baby Diaper Rash Treatment

Diaper rash usually comes in the form of inflamed skin, appearing as a melange of swollen and tender looking, bright red skin on a baby’s bottom, thigh or genital region. The baby may also fuss or cry when the diaper area is washed or touched during diaper changes.

CAUSES OF BABY DIAPER RASH

Diaper rash may be caused by a number of reasons. Some include: Wetness, chafing, chemical sensitivity, and new foods.

Wetness: When the child’s urine mixes with faecal bacteria, it forms ammonia, which is extremely harsh on the skin. Moreover, any child left in a dirty diaper for too long is also more than likely to develop diaper rash.

Chafing: When the diaper constantly rubs against the child’s skin, he or she may develop diaper rash.

Chemical sensitivity: Diaper rash may also result if the child is sensitive to the detergents used to wash a cloth diaper, or fragrance chemicals in a disposable one. It is also possible that the powder or cream you’re using doesn’t agree with the child’s skin.

New foods: As babies begin to eat solid foods, the composition of their stool changes, and the skin may thus react accordingly.

COMMON REMEDIES

Doctors will normally prescribe mild hydrocortisone cream as treatment. If the baby has a yeast or fungal infection resultant from the diaper rash, the doctor may prescribe an antifungal cream. If it is a bacterial infection, topical or oral antibiotics may be given. Various diaper rash medications are also available without need for a prescription, such as A+D, Balmex, Desitin, Triple paste and Zinc oxide paste.

HOME REMEDIES

To aid the healing of diaper rash, one must do one’s best to increase airflow to the region. For example, one can let the child go without the diaper for some time, or use larger than usual sized diapers until the rash goes away.

EMU OIL

Finally, one can also use Emu oil. Emu oil is a natural remedy that has scientifically proven anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities. It  can sooth and treat a myriad of skin problems including diaper rash.
