Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the skin (psoriasis) and joints (inflammatory arthritis). Psoriasis is a condition that features red, scaly rash. Most people first develop psoriasis, and then are later diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, but joint problems can occasionally occur before skin lacerations appear.

Psoriatic arthritis can also cause eyes, heart, lungs, and kidneys inflammations.

What causes Psoriatic Arthritis?

The cause of psoriatic arthritis is currently unknown. Certain changes in the immune system may be important in the development of psoriatic arthritis. The decrease in the number of immune cells in AIDS/HIV patients may contribute to development and progression of psoriasis. Other triggers of psoriatic arthritis may include: injury to the skin, sunlight, streptococcal infections, drugs, emotional stress, smoking, alcohol, and hormone changes.

What are symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis?

Usually, psoriatic arthritis inflames only a few joints at a time. The inflamed joints become stiff, painful, swollen, hot, and red, a sausage-like swelling of fingers and toes. Psoriatic arthritis can also cause pain at the points where tendons and ligaments attach to your bones. Occasionally, psoriatic arthritis can affect the small joints at the ends of the fingers.

Psoriatic arthritis can cause inflammation in the lungs and eyes. Inflammation in and around the lungs causes chest pain and shortness of breath. Inflammation in the iris can be aggravated by bright light as the iris opens and closes the opening of the eye’s pupil, causing much pain.

Acne and nail changes are a common symptom of psoriatic arthritis. Ridges and pitting can be observed in the fingernails and toenails of 80% of sufferers. Acne has been noted to occur in higher frequency in patients with psoriatic arthritis.
